Helpful Hints: Excel Shortcuts

September 29, 2013

Being in digital marketing, you tend to use Microsoft Excel… a LOT. It’s an everyday tool that holds your crazy amount of data, charts, pivot tables, etc, etc, etc. And anytime I find a new shortcut or a more efficient way to handle reporting, I get so pumped! [It’s the little things, guys.] I decided to compile just a few of my favorite [and helpful] everyday shortcuts that are guaranteed to help save you time and keep you moving along on that excel-driven lifestyle. Enjoy!

Merging Data from Two Columns

Helpful Hint: The equation =CONCATENATE + column 1 data + space between data + column 2 data

Interested in combing two or more columns of data? Use the above equation to help facilitate just that. The space between the columns will be two quotation marks. Don’t forget that!

Splitting Cell Data

Helpful Hint: The source – Data > Text-to-Columns

So, let’s say you want to divide a column of data into adjacent columns. Navigate to the probably rarely used “Text-to-Columns” button under Data. Make sure “Delimited” is marked and click Next. Follow the screen show below to make sure you will get desired results. If one column has one or more words, put quotation marks around it so it is seen as a single item.
