I’ve read a lot of posts lately about bloggers questioned and/or accused of leading perfectly clean, filtered and organized lives. And some of those bloggers feel awful about this “perfect” perception, because, you guessed it, it’s just not true. But worse than the perception is the judgement that can sometimes follow.
Judgement sucks. No matter what size, shape or form it takes. It’s that quick peel of a band-aid that is ripped off a newly-healed knee. {Cue shameless plug of my adorable little that just experienced this literally for the first time!} Stings for sure. But it’s fleeting. Why? Because the truth is that those images placed on the blogs and social media are still real, regardless if a blogger decides to share every detail or just moments.
Think about this – you see a beautifully styled picnic for two from a twenty-something lifestyle blogger. Next, there is an amazing DIY project from the toddler of a mommy blogger. Those are moments experienced and begging to be shared. Proud? Maybe. A benefit for their readers? Possibly. Are they everyday moments? Not necessarily. Do special moments make a blogger inauthentic? I don’t think so.
Will you see a post from the very same twenty-something lifestyle blogger about how she spilled her iced coffee on her new dress as she walked into work? Will you read about how that artistic toddler decided to use her diaper contents to create that next beautiful art project? {graphic…sorry!} Maybe. Bloggers are still choosing. And that’s great. Because your blog is what you make of it. And it’s all real.
Unfortunately, we can’t live tweet our lives 24/7/365 or snap pictures every two minutes. THAT is unreal. But we can photo-dump to help fill in those gaps and begin to chip away at the perceived blogging persona, showing a few details and another inside look.
Who wants to join in? Here are a few snaps of random life lately…
