Thursday Thoughts: The Power of a Team

August 22, 2013

I’m not sure if it’s just because I’m subconsciously noticing this subject or if the topic was all a-buzz this week, but there was a common theme my brain kept running into – no one does it alone. “It” can really be defined as anything. Sure, you might be the primary responsible party, but most positive end results come into fruition from a team effort. You may or may not be aware of this, and if you aren’t aware or acknowledging the members of your team, I can only imagine the exhaustion you feel. Because I was there.

Maintain your Mental Bandwidth :: #EatSleepMarket

A perfect example happened during the first few weeks after I gave birth to my little girl. I wanted to do it all – I wanted to feel like I could do it all. In reality, if it came to it, could I do it all? Absolutely. Would other areas suffer? Absolutely. Is this ideal? Well, no. But, why would I not accept this challenge? I mean, this little person is my responsibility. My world. Well, I’m hear to tell you that no matter how big or small your support system or team may be, the kind words, the prepared meals, the phone conversations – they add up. And they add to your mental bandwidth, allowing you to go the distance. [cue the magical whisper from Field of Dreams.]

I was once asked in a previous job how I was doing with my mental bandwidth. I had to laugh. I mean, what kind of question is that? Especially when it came from a person that I met with on a weekly basis and we discussed anything and everything pertaining to our positions. It was just humorous. But I digress. It was clearly a stressful time, and I do a pretty good job, at least I thought, of hiding or ignoring the level of stress that I reached. Not this time, hence the mental bandwidth inquiry. This question snapped me back into reality and made me reassess how I was feeling about the workload and remember that this person who was asking was actually a member of my team. A partner in crime. Someone who would help me achieve results. This person was going to help improve my mental bandwidth.

Never underestimate the power of your support system/team/group/whatever you label it. In order to continue your effectiveness and increased level of efficiency, those individuals may play a critical role.

How does your team help you through those tough moments?

Shameless [team] plug!

My family/team will be participating in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s this weekend (8/31/13). Please support our team by either joining in a walk near you, donating a $1 to help us walk, or sharing this post to help further the awareness! Every little bit truly helps. Thank you!
