Week in Review: Internet Sensations

May 25, 2013

It’s been such a crazy week. I really have neglected my little blogging duties – sorry, everyone! And even though it was busy, it was a lot of fun, so there’s that. During the week, I discovered a few fun sites, learned about new, important updates in the industry, and got my May Birchbox (I know, off topic but yay!! Might be a post in My Night Life later..). Alright, let’s get this wait over and share my review of the week
Internet Sensations #EatSleepMarket

1. May Designs – I love you

Okay, total girl moment. If you are looking for really adorable, affordable, sustainable notebooks, look no further. May Designs, a green company, seemed to develop as a result of envious friends. Mica May couldn’t find notebooks that suited her – so she started designing them and viola! Requests poured in out of seeing her tote hers to meetings and outings. The online store was born.

Be sure to check them out online. The May Designs Instagram page is definitely something to gush over.

2. Daily Odd Compliment – Thanks for the chuckle.

Just a really clever tumblr that I stumbled across on Pinterest (check out that social string!). And I’ve been reading his blog every single day. It’s totally my style and humor. Can’t get enough – check it out and let me know if it brings a smile!

3. Penguin 2.0 Launched

The time finally came on Wednesday when Google launched Penguin 2.0, and it was not more than 24 hours that sites saw the effects. The areas that saw the biggest impact? Porn sites, game sites and big brands. A few of the big brands were a bit surprising, and it seems the overall impact was minimal. It hit sites that may or may not have developed a robust SEO strategy or sites that did not have a substantial linking structure. Although I can see these to be valid reasons to take a hit in organic search, it’s just surprising to see those big brands mentioned take a hit. However, it will continue to drive home the importance of these updates, forcing those reputable sites to take a second look at their digital strategies. It’s time to develop those strategies – they will not only help your website’s performance on the web but also increase the overall user experience. Definitely stresses that no one is excluded from these updates.

4. Cat Bearding Surged

Originally started in 2011, this specific meme of cat bearding started to make its second debut this week in full force, causing a lot of buzz on all social networking sites. Another reason why memes can be an effective marketing tactic – they hit hard but have a tendency to be short lived. Advice? Consider taking a spin on the meme train with an upcoming brand promotion, sale, or event. It may supply that relevant yet unique spin on something that is widespread, but will ultimately stand on its own.
